How to pick a bike size

Once you've found the bike you're interested in, picking the correct size can make it more comfortable, more efficient to pedal and more fun to ride. The following is a help guide that gives our customers some basic advice on choosing the right bike size. It’s a guide only and we always recommend visiting a Bikeland stores near you, or contacting us for more help and guidance.

Body Measurements

Before deciding or contacting us on what bike size to buy, you'll need to know these body measurements.

Tip: In our bike shops we have professional measuring equipment, but at home you may not. For better at home results try meassuring a few times and average each measurement.

Height:

  1. With shoes off, lean with your back against a wall.
  2. Place a hard cover book on the top of your head.
  3. Measure from ground to the bottom of the book.
  4. This is your height measurement.

Leg Inseam:

The inseam needed for a bike size, IS NOT the same as for pants.

  1. With no shoes lean with your back against a wall.
  2. Spread legs roughly 6 inches apart.
  3. Gently place a hard cover book between your legs.
  4. Gently move the book as high as it can go with genitals out of the way.
  5. Measure from ground to the top of the book.
  6. This is your inner leg length, that is also known as your leg inseam.

Armspan:

  1. Spread arms horizontally.
  2. Measure from tip to tip of your middle index fingers.
  3. This is your armspan length.

Chestspan:

  1. Measure from armpit to armpit.
  2. This is your Chestspan size.

Foot:

  1. Remove shoes.
  2. Measure from the tip of the big toe to back of heal.
  3. Measure both feet.
  4. The longer one is your foot size.

What bike size to buy?

Some bikes come with a sizing chart and it’s possible you may fit on one or more bike sizes. In general, for comfort or longer limbs it means choosing a larger bike size. For racing or shorter limbs it generally means choosing a smaller bike size. Opt for the smaller size if:

  1. You have longer legs and shorter upper body.
  2. The bike's intended use is racing.

Opt for the larger size if:

  1. You have shorter legs and long upper body.
  2. You perfer and enjoy a more relaxed ride.
  3. You're a growing child or youth.
